Freemasons dig deep with £15,000 donation to Jubilee Sailing Trust

Jubilee Sailing Trust has received £15,000 for its Buddy Bursary scheme that funds places on tall ship sailing voyages for the carers of severely disabled people.

For many people experiencing serious disabilities it would not be possible to take part in the voyage without the assistance of their carer, the cost of which can be prohibitive.

In 2012, The Freemasons’ Grand Charity helped to launch this scheme with a grant of £25,000, and the Trust has seen it grow in success.

Speaking about the donation during a visit to the SV Tenacious, Mike Wilks the Provincial Grand Master for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Freemasons, said: “The Jubilee Sailing Trust provides a unique and exciting opportunity for people with severe disabilities and should be applauded for its work.

“It is our hope that this donation goes someway to bringing joy and happiness to those who benefit from it, and we are very happy to support the Trust.”

For a number of years Hampshire and Isle of Wight Freemasons have also given much of their time and effort in assisting at the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s annual Pumpkin Festival, which is held at the Victoria Country Park, Netley, near Southampton.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust’s mission is to promote the integration of people of all physical abilities through the challenge and adventure of tall ship sailing.

By taking a roughly equal number of able-bodied and disabled people, the charity promotes values of equality and understanding and strives to tackle disability discrimination.
